Is it right for you?

When do you need a crown, inlay or onlay?

The aim is to keep as much of your own tooth as possible. A smaller restoration is used when it's enough; a crown when the tooth needs full protection.

Covers the whole tooth

Crown

For a cracked or badly broken tooth, a tooth with a very large old filling, or a back tooth after root canal treatment, which can become brittle.

Fits inside or over part of the tooth

Inlay or onlay

For a cavity or old filling too large for a direct filling but where the walls of the tooth are still sound.

Front teeth

Broken front tooth

A chipped or fractured front tooth can be rebuilt with ceramic matched to the teeth beside it. For shape or color changes across several front teeth, see  porcelain veneers.

How we work

How are crowns made at Standard Dental?

Digital scans.  Teeth are recorded with intraoral scanners (TRIOS and CEREC Primescan), so the lab works from a precise 3D model of your bite.

An in-house lab.  The clinic's own dental laboratory, led by a master technician with about 19 years' experience according to the clinic's YouTube channel, makes the restoration. Because the lab is part of the clinic, shade and shape can be adjusted on the day you try the crown in.

Specialists for each step.  If the nerve is involved, root canal treatment or retreatment is done first by Dr. Yun-hee Lee, a conservative dentistry specialist. A post and core may be needed to rebuild the tooth before the crown. The prosthodontists then design the crown for your bite. Read their backgrounds on  our specialist dentists page.

Missing the tooth altogether?  A crown needs a root to sit on. If the tooth can't be saved, see  dental implants in Jamsil.

FAQ

Ceramic crowns in Jamsil, Seoul: common questions

How much is a zirconia crown at Standard Dental in Seoul?

₩600,000 per tooth (approx. US$430), the same as an all-ceramic or gold crown, according to the clinic's fee disclosure. PFM and metal crowns are ₩400,000. The final cost is confirmed after examination.

Zirconia, all-ceramic or PFM: which should I choose?

As a general guide, zirconia is very strong and often used on back teeth; all-ceramic crowns are chosen for their translucency on front teeth; PFM (porcelain fused to metal) has a metal core. The prosthodontist recommends a material for your tooth and bite.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Often, especially on back teeth, because a root-treated tooth can become brittle. The dentist will tell you whether yours needs a crown or whether a smaller restoration is enough.

Inlay or crown — what's the difference?

An inlay or onlay replaces only the damaged part of the tooth; a crown covers the whole tooth. A smaller restoration keeps more of your own tooth when it is strong enough.

How many visits does a crown take?

It depends on the tooth, for example whether root canal treatment is needed first. Ask us with an X-ray or photo before you travel.

Is there a guarantee on crowns?

Yes. With yearly check-ups, the clinic re-treats general and aesthetic prosthetics at no charge within 1 year and at 50% of the normal fee between 1 and 3 years, excluding accidents, trauma and careless use.
